Clipping vs Affiliate CPA for iGaming: The Cost per FTD Math

August 11, 2026

Clipping vs Affiliate CPA for iGaming: The Cost per FTD Math

Quick answer: Affiliates price the depositor directly: in our campaign data, iGaming CPA deals clear at $50–$250 per first-time depositor (FTD) depending on geo and vertical, with Tier-1 regulated markets trading at the top of that band and beyond. Clipping prices attention instead, at roughly $1–$5 per 1,000 views (CPM). To compare them you have to convert views into depositors. The break-even formula is simple: FTDs needed per 100,000 views = CPM × 100 ÷ CPA. At a $2 CPM against a $200 CPA, clipping wins if more than 1 in 100,000 views becomes a depositor, and everything above that is margin the affiliate model never gives back.

Two Channels, Two Different Units

The reason operators argue about this comparison is that the two channels don't sell the same thing.

  • Affiliate CPA is a results contract: you pay when a referred player makes a first deposit. Risk sits with the affiliate; certainty costs you a premium, and the affiliate keeps the audience asset (their site, their rankings, their list).
  • Clipping is a reach contract: you pay creator networks to flood TikTok, Reels, Shorts and X with short-form clips, priced per 1,000 views. Risk sits with you; in exchange the effective price of attention is a fraction of what sponsorships or (where they're even allowed) paid ads cost, and the brand equity accrues to you, not a middleman.

Neither is "cheaper" in the abstract. The only honest comparison is cost per FTD, which affiliates quote directly and clipping requires you to model.

What Affiliate Deals Actually Cost in 2026

From the deals we negotiate and benchmark across casino, sportsbook and crypto-gambling programs (full data in our iGaming affiliate CPA rates 2026 breakdown):

  • CPA: $50–$250 per FTD is the working band. Emerging markets and crypto casinos sit at the low end; Tier-1 regulated geos (UK, Ontario, regulated US states, DACH, Nordics) trade at the top, and premium placements go higher still. Industry benchmarks put Tier-1 medians around the $250 mark.
  • Revenue share: 20–50% of net gaming revenue (NGR) is standard. RevShare looks free on day one and becomes your most expensive channel on high-LTV players; a 40% lifetime share of a strong player usually exceeds any CPA you'd have paid.
  • Hybrid: a reduced CPA plus reduced RevShare, deals like $60 + 20% are common on mid-tier programs, splitting risk both ways.

Add the quieter costs: affiliate program fees, the fraud and bonus-abuse tax, and minimum-deposit thresholds that affiliates optimize to exactly hit. The sticker CPA understates the all-in number. Our operator's affiliate playbook covers how to structure these deals properly.

Modelling Clipping in Cost-per-FTD Terms

A clipping campaign converts budget into deposits through four rates you should agree on before launch:

  1. CPM: what you pay per 1,000 views. Managed clipping with vetted creators runs $1–$5; our waves typically deliver 15–30 vetted placements per $15K wave inside that band.
  2. View-to-visit rate: what share of viewers reach your site or app store page. Without clickable links (most platforms), 0.05–0.30% is the realistic planning range, driven by branded search and bio links.
  3. Visit-to-registration rate: 5–15% for a competent funnel.
  4. Registration-to-FTD rate: 15–35% depending on bonus design and KYC friction.

Worked example, deliberately conservative: $10,000 at $2 CPM buys 5,000,000 views. At a 0.10% view-to-visit rate that's 5,000 visits; at 10% registration that's 500 registrations; at 20% deposit conversion that's 100 FTDs, so $100 per FTD, inside the affiliate band, with the brand impressions thrown in free. Cut every assumption to its floor (0.05% / 5% / 15%) and the same spend yields ~19 FTDs at roughly $530 per FTD, worse than any affiliate deal. Push to the observed highs (0.30% / 15% / 30%) and you're near $15 per FTD. The spread is the point: clipping is a leveraged bet on funnel quality and creative, which is why you model it before you buy it, and measure it honestly after (see how to attribute clip views to FTDs).

The Break-Even Formula

Skip the spreadsheet when you just need a sanity check:

Required FTDs per 100,000 views = CPM × 100 ÷ affiliate CPA

  • $2 CPM vs $200 CPA → 1.0 FTD per 100k views to break even
  • $3 CPM vs $150 CPA → 2.0 FTDs per 100k views
  • $5 CPM vs $250 CPA → 2.0 FTDs per 100k views
  • $1 CPM vs $100 CPA → 1.0 FTD per 100k views

If your funnel can't plausibly turn one-in-a-hundred-thousand viewers into depositors, fix the funnel before buying reach, no channel will save weak conversion.

The Licensed-Geo Haircut Everyone Forgets

Views are global by default; your license isn't. If only 40% of a campaign's views land in markets where you can legally accept players, your effective cost per usable view is 2.5× the sticker CPM, and your modelled cost per FTD moves the same way. Two rules we enforce on every campaign:

  • Contract the geo scope upfront: creator selection, language and platform mix should be chosen for your licensed markets, not discovered after the recap deck.
  • Count only licensed-geo views in the model: a smaller, geo-true number beats a big vanity number. Our iGaming clipping compliance guide covers the full geo, disclosure and age-rules stack.

What Each Channel Buys That the Other Can't

Affiliate CPA gives you a floor. Predictable unit cost, pay-on-result, easy finance approval. It also caps your upside: the affiliate owns the audience, rates rise in competitive geos and the model becomes brutally expensive precisely when your product converts well, since RevShare and CPA both reprice against your success.

Clipping gives you leverage. Attention at $1–5 CPM feeds every other channel: branded search rises, your affiliates convert better, your app store rankings improve, and the content library is a reusable asset. Its weakness is variance, which is why it rewards operators who test creative aggressively and measure with geo holdouts rather than last-click wishful thinking.

The strongest 2026 acquisition mixes we run use both: affiliates as the guaranteed baseline, clipping as the compounding layer that pulls blended CAC down quarter over quarter, particularly as ad platforms keep tightening gambling policies and paid social keeps shrinking as an option. That mix is exactly what our iGaming clipping agency and iGaming affiliate marketing agency teams run as one program.

FAQ

Is clipping cheaper than affiliate CPA for casinos?

Modelled honestly, managed clipping typically lands between $40–$150 per FTD when funnel rates are mid-range, against affiliate CPAs of $50–$250. Clipping wins on blended cost when creative and funnel are strong; affiliates win on certainty when they're not. Most operators should run both.

How many clip views does one FTD take?

Using conservative mid-range rates (0.10% view-to-visit, 10% registration, 20% deposit), roughly 50,000–100,000 views per FTD. Strong creative in a focused geo can cut that several-fold; the break-even formula above tells you what your CPA equivalent requires.

What should be agreed with a clipping agency before launch?

Four things in writing: the CPM (and what counts as a verified view), the licensed-geo scope of distribution, the disclosure and RG-compliance spec per market, and the attribution methodology (geo holdout, promo codes, branded-search lift) that will decide cost per FTD. See our verified views guide for the audit checklist.

Does revenue share ever beat CPA?

RevShare beats CPA when player quality is uncertain or LTV is low, you pay proportionally to what you earn. On proven high-LTV geos, CPA usually beats a 30–40% lifetime share. Hybrids exist precisely because neither side wants to be wrong alone.
